How French works

Regular -re verbs in the present tense

Key points

  • Some verbs in French end in -re.
  • To form the present tense of most -re verbs, take off the -re and add -s, -s, -[nothing], -ons, -ez, -ent.

There is another group of regular verbs which end in -re. The verb rendre which means to give back is an –re verb and it conjugates as follows:

Table 3: -ir verbs
rendre to give back
je rends
tu rends
il / elle rend
nous rendons
vous rendez
ils / elles rendent

Note

Not all verbs ending -re are regular verbs. For example prendre has the nous form prenons and not prendons

Here are some examples:

Est-ce que vous vendez des timbres?

Do you sell stamps?

Il répond à ma lettre

He replies to my letter

Nous attendons le bus

We’re waiting for the bus

J'entends les oiseaux

I can hear the birds
