How French works
Beginner Unit 40:

The subjunctive - use

Key points

  • The subjunctive is used after the word que where there is an idea of wishing or needing, possibility or doubt, and emotion or judgement.
  • It's also used after certain conjunctions such as bien que (although), pourvu que (provided that), pour que (in order that) and avant que (before)

The subjunctive is used after the word que in a number of different circumstances. These include expressing a wish or need:

Je veux qu’elle vienne ce soir

I want her to come this evening

Je préférerais que nous y allions tout de suite

I’d prefer it if we went straightaway

Il faut que nous partions tôt

We must leave early

Expressing a possibility or doubt:

Il est possible que nous arrivions en retard

It’s possible we’ll arrive late

Je doute qu’il dise la vérité

I doubt he’s telling the truth

Expressing an emotion or judgement:

Nous sommes très contents que tu aies réussi ton examen

We’re very pleased you passed your exam

Il est dommage que vous ayez perdu

It’s a shame you lost

Note

Beware of subjunctivitis! Many conjunctions such as parce que don't take the subjunctive even though they include que.

And after certain conjunctions such as bien que (although), pourvu que (provided that), pour que (in order that) and avant que (before):

Bien qu’il soit malade, il continue à travailler

Although he’s unwell, he’s carrying on working
