Cardinal numbers 1-69

Key points

  • Hyphens are generally used when writing cardinal numbers made up of more than one word: dix-sept.
  • This is not the case before and after et: trente et un.

Cardinal numbers are numbers used in counting, like 1, 2 or 3.

The French numbers 1 to 69 are formed in a similar way to English numbers, except that the numbers 21, 31 etc contain et:

vingt et un

twenty-one

trente et un

thirty-one

Notice that hyphens are used in numbers made up of more than one word:

dix-sept

seventeen

cinquante-cinq

fifty-five

Hyphens are not used, however, before and after et:

trente et un

thirty-one
