The future of regular –ir, -re verbs

Key points

  • For most verbs ending in -ir, the future tense is formed by taking off the infinitive and adding the future endings: je finirai, tu finiras, etc.
  • For most verbs ending in -re, the future tense is formed by taking off the final –e from the infinitive and adding the future endings: je rendrai, tu rendras, etc.

For most verbs ending in -ir, the future tense is formed by taking off the infinitive and adding the future endings:

je finirai
tu finiras
il / elle finira
nous finirons
vous finirez
ils / elles finiront

Here are some examples:

Tu finiras tes devoirs avant de regarder la télévision

You’ll finish your homework before watching television

Elle réussira ses examens

She’ll pass her exams

For most verbs ending in -re, the future tense is formed by taking off the final –e from the infinitive and adding the future endings:
