Indirect object pronouns (me, te, le)

  • The indirect object pronouns in French are me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur.
  • French indirect object pronouns come before the verb.

In English an indirect object is similar to a direct object , except it usually has the word to coming before it. For example, in the sentence Paul talks to Marie, the noun Marie is the indirect object of the verb talks. In English to Marie can be replaced by the indirect object pronoun to her:

Paul talks to Marie   →   Paul talks to her

The French equivalent of to her is lui. As with French direct object pronouns, French indirect object pronouns come before the verb :

Paul parle à Marie   →   Paul lui parle

Paul talks to Marie - Paul talks to her

In French the indirect object pronouns are as follows:
