A direct object is a word which experiences the direct action of a verb . For example, in the sentence Paul sees Marie, the noun Marie is the direct object of the verb sees. In English Marie can be replaced by the pronoun her.
The French equivalent of her is la. An important thing to remember is that unlike in English, French direct object pronouns come before the verb :
Paul voit Marie → Paul la voit
Paul sees Marie - Paul sees her
In French the full list of pronouns that can be used to replace a direct object is as follows:
French | English |
---|---|
me | me |
te | you |
le | him / it |
la | her / it |
nous | us |

les | them |
