The conditional
1 Formation
1.1 Regular verbs
For all verbs the conditional is formed by taking the future
stem
and adding the following
endings -ais, ais, -ait,
-ions, -iez, -aient.

We didn’t think that someone would renovate this old ruin.
Il a dit que dans vingt ans on guérirait deux fois plus de malades qu’aujourd’hui.
He said that in twenty years twice as many diseases would be cured than today.
S’il ne pleuvait pas je désherberais le jardin.
If it wasn’t raining I’d weed the garden.
Le ministre a déclaré qu'il réfléchirait à la proposition soumise par les syndicats.
The minister declared that he would consider the proposal presented by the unions.
Il jouerait bien au football samedi, mais il est trop occupé.
He would play football on Saturday, but he’s too busy.
1.2 Semi-irregular verbs
Formation is the same for semi-irregular verbs:

Would you prefer to come tomorrow?
Si tu prenais le train je t’ emmènerais à la gare.
If you were going by train I’d take you to the station.
Nous rachèterions bien la maison d’en face mais elle est trop chère.
We would buy the house across the road but it’s too expensive.
Il voulait lui offrir un cadeau dont elle se rappellerait toujours.
He wanted to give her a present she’d remember for ever.
Ils n’ont pas prévu qu'il neigerait.
They didn’t forecast snow.
1.3 Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs are formed in the same manner as regular and semi-irregular verbs:

J’irais avec vous au cinéma si j’avais moins de travail.
I’d go to the cinema with you if I had less work.
Nous devrions choisir un autre jour pour la réunion.
We ought to choose another day for the meeting.
Je suivrais volontiers ses conseils mais je souhaiterais avoir quelques précisions.
I’d happily follow his advice but I’d like to have a few clarifications.
Si je n’avais pas tant de travail je les rejoindrais bien en ville.
If I didn’t have so much work I’d join them in town.
2 Use of the conditional
The conditional is used in the following contexts:
2.1 Expressing wish, need
When expressing a wish or need:
Ce serait bien agréable d'aller
à la plage aujourd'hui
It would be really nice to go to the beach today
2.2 Sentences containing si
In a sentence containing si:
Je viendrais avec vous si je
n'étais pas si fatigué
I would come with you if I wasn't so tired
2.3 Polite requests
For making polite requests or suggestions:
Pourriez-vous m'aider, je cherche
l'Hotel de Ville?
Could you help me, I'm looking for the Town Hall
2.4 After au cas où
Je prendrai un pullover au cas où le temps se refroidirait
I'll take a jumper in case it gets colder
2.5 In the conditional perfect
Si tu me l'avais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t'aider
If you had told me sooner, I would have come and helped you
Ils auraient déménagé que cela ne m’étonnerait pas.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they had moved.
Tu aurais fait mieux d’aller voir le médecin tout de suite.
You’d have been better off going to see the doctor straightaway.
L’entreprise aurait dû réduire son personnel.
The business should have reduced its staff.
Si vous l’aviez prévenu de votre absence il aurait pu trouver un remplaçant.
If you’d told him you weren’t going to be there he could have found a replacement.
Si ma voiture n’était pas tombée en panne je serais arrivé à temps pour le match.
If my car hadn’t broken down I’d have arrived on time for the match.
