The conditional
1 Formation
1.1 Regular verbs
For all verbs the conditional is formed by taking the future
stem
and adding the following
endings -ais, ais, -ait,
-ions, -iez, -aient.

They telephoned to say that their delivery men would deliver the freezer tomorrow.
Le ministre a dit qu'elle travaillerait à réduire le taux d'inflation.
The minister said she would work to reduce the rate of inflation.
Les photos ne jauniraient pas si tu les laissais dans leur album.
The photos wouldn’t go yellow if you left them in their album.
Il m’a dit qu'il resterait jusqu’à dimanche.
He told me he’d stay until Sunday.
Je lui en parlerais bien si je croyais que ça changerait quelque chose.
I’d speak to him about it if I thought it would change anything.
1.2 Semi-irregular verbs
Formation is the same for semi-irregular verbs:

Le ministre a promis que le pays démantèlerait ces trois vieilles centrales nucléaires.
The minister promised that the country would dismantle these three old nuclear power stations.
Est-ce que vous changeriez d’emploi si vous le pouviez?
Would you change job if you could?
Si j’étais riche j’ achèterais une maison à la campagne.
If I were rich I’d buy a house in the country.
Elle a dit qu'elle réglerait cette facture la semaine prochaine.
She said she’d settle this bill next week.
Nous rachèterions bien la maison d’en face mais elle est trop chère.
We would buy the house across the road but it’s too expensive.
1.3 Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs are formed in the same manner as regular and semi-irregular verbs:

Should one kill an animal for its skin?
Est-ce que ça t’ ennuierait d’aller chez le boulanger avant de rentrer?
Would you mind going to the baker’s before you get back?
On exagérerait à peine de dire qu’il a sauvé l’entreprise tout seul.
It would be no exaggeration to say that he saved the company single-handed.
S’il ne pleuvait pas ils iraient jouer dans le jardin.
If it wasn’t raining they’d go and play in the garden.
2 Use of the conditional
The conditional is used in the following contexts:
2.1 Expressing wish, need
When expressing a wish or need:
Ce serait bien agréable d'aller
à la plage aujourd'hui
It would be really nice to go to the beach today
2.2 Sentences containing si
In a sentence containing si:
Je viendrais avec vous si je
n'étais pas si fatigué
I would come with you if I wasn't so tired
2.3 Polite requests
For making polite requests or suggestions:
Pourriez-vous m'aider, je cherche
l'Hotel de Ville?
Could you help me, I'm looking for the Town Hall
2.4 After au cas où
Je prendrai un pullover au cas où le temps se refroidirait
I'll take a jumper in case it gets colder
2.5 In the conditional perfect
Si tu me l'avais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t'aider
If you had told me sooner, I would have come and helped you
En coupant à travers champs nous aurions gagné une demi-heure.
If we’d cut across country we’d have saved half an hour.
Selon le gardien personne ne serait sorti ce soir-là.
According to the foreman nobody left that evening.
Si vous l’aviez prévenu de votre absence il aurait pu trouver un remplaçant.
If you’d told him you weren’t going to be there he could have found a replacement.
Nous aurions voulu voir ce film dès sa sortie.
We would have liked to have seen this film when it came out.
Si vous étiez venu hier soir vous auriez rencontré mon frère.
If you had come last night you’d have met my brother.
