The conditional
1 Formation
1.1 Regular verbs
For all verbs the conditional is formed by taking the future
stem
and adding the following
endings -ais, ais, -ait,
-ions, -iez, -aient.

It would surprise me if he accepted the job.
Il jouerait bien au football samedi, mais il est trop occupé.
He would play football on Saturday, but he’s too busy.
Si nous avions de l’argent nous t’en donnerions.
If we had any money we would give you some.
S’il n’aimait pas la France il ne s’y installerait pas.
If he didn’t like France he wouldn’t settle there.
L’ordinateur marcherait certainement mieux si tu le branchais.
The computer would certainly work better if you plugged it in.
1.2 Semi-irregular verbs
Formation is the same for semi-irregular verbs:

Ils n’ont pas prévu qu'il neigerait.
They didn’t forecast snow.
Il voulait lui offrir un cadeau dont elle se rappellerait toujours.
He wanted to give her a present she’d remember for ever.
La météo avait annoncé qu’il gèlerait la nuit dernière.
The weather forecast said there would be frost last night.
Selon la météo l’automne s’annoncerait humide.
According to the weather forecast autumn will be wet.
1.3 Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs are formed in the same manner as regular and semi-irregular verbs:

Si je le savais je te dirais où il habite.
If I knew I’d tell you where he lived.
Ta soeur se tairait si tu cessais de l’embêter.
Your sister would be quiet if you stopped annoying her.
Ils ont dit qu'ils nous rejoindraient dimanche.
They said they’d join us on Sunday.
2 Use of the conditional
The conditional is used in the following contexts:
2.1 Expressing wish, need
When expressing a wish or need:
Ce serait bien agréable d'aller
à la plage aujourd'hui
It would be really nice to go to the beach today
2.2 Sentences containing si
In a sentence containing si:
Je viendrais avec vous si je
n'étais pas si fatigué
I would come with you if I wasn't so tired
2.3 Polite requests
For making polite requests or suggestions:
Pourriez-vous m'aider, je cherche
l'Hotel de Ville?
Could you help me, I'm looking for the Town Hall
2.4 After au cas où
Je prendrai un pullover au cas où le temps se refroidirait
I'll take a jumper in case it gets colder
2.5 In the conditional perfect
Si tu me l'avais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t'aider
If you had told me sooner, I would have come and helped you
Si ma voiture n’était pas tombée en panne je serais arrivé à temps pour le match.
If my car hadn’t broken down I’d have arrived on time for the match.
L’entreprise aurait dû réduire son personnel.
The business should have reduced its staff.
Si j’avais su je serais allé à la banque moi-même.
If I’d known I’d have gone to the bank myself.
Si nous avions pris ce chemin nous aurions gagné du temps.
If we had taken this route we’d have saved time.
Nous aurions aimé avoir eu un entretien avec le directeur.
We’d have liked to have had an interview with the managing director.
