The conditional
1 Formation
1.1 Regular verbs
For all verbs the conditional is formed by taking the future
stem
and adding the following
endings -ais, ais, -ait,
-ions, -iez, -aient.

If he didn’t like France he wouldn’t settle there.
Nous ne pensions pas que quelqu'un rénoverait cette vieille ruine.
We didn’t think that someone would renovate this old ruin.
Je t’avais bien dit que tu vendrais ta voiture facilement.
I told you you’d sell your car easily.
S’il n’était pas fatigué je lui demanderais de m’aider.
If he wasn’t tired I’d ask him to help me.
Si nous prenions un taxi nous arriverions plus tôt.
If we took a taxi we’d arrive earlier.
1.2 Semi-irregular verbs
Formation is the same for semi-irregular verbs:

Il voulait lui offrir un cadeau dont elle se rappellerait toujours.
He wanted to give her a present she’d remember for ever.
Selon la météo l’automne s’annoncerait humide.
According to the weather forecast autumn will be wet.
Elle a dit qu'elle réglerait cette facture la semaine prochaine.
She said she’d settle this bill next week.
Selon les journaux il renouvellerait son offre d’achat dans quelques semaines.
According to the papers he'll renew his takeover bid in a few weeks.
Est-ce que vous préféreriez venir demain?
Would you prefer to come tomorrow?
1.3 Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs are formed in the same manner as regular and semi-irregular verbs:

Il gèlerait cette nuit que cela ne m’étonnerait pas.
It wouldn’t surprise me if there was a frost tonight.
Pourrais-tu me prêter vingt euros?
Could you lend me twenty euros?
Si nous n’étions pas si pressés nous ne prendrions pas l’autoroute.
If we weren’t in such a hurry we wouldn’t take the motorway.
Auriez-vous le temps de venir m’aider?
Would you have the time to come and help me?
2 Use of the conditional
The conditional is used in the following contexts:
2.1 Expressing wish, need
When expressing a wish or need:
Ce serait bien agréable d'aller
à la plage aujourd'hui
It would be really nice to go to the beach today
2.2 Sentences containing si
In a sentence containing si:
Je viendrais avec vous si je
n'étais pas si fatigué
I would come with you if I wasn't so tired
2.3 Polite requests
For making polite requests or suggestions:
Pourriez-vous m'aider, je cherche
l'Hotel de Ville?
Could you help me, I'm looking for the Town Hall
2.4 After au cas où
Je prendrai un pullover au cas où le temps se refroidirait
I'll take a jumper in case it gets colder
2.5 In the conditional perfect
Si tu me l'avais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t'aider
If you had told me sooner, I would have come and helped you
Si nous avions pris ce chemin nous aurions gagné du temps.
If we had taken this route we’d have saved time.
Ils auraient déménagé que cela ne m’étonnerait pas.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they had moved.
Si tu étais parti plus tôt tu serais arrivé à l’heure.
If you had left earlier you’d have arrived on time.
Tu me l’aurais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t’aider
If you had told me sooner I’d have come to help you.
D’après le directeur les bénéfices auraient diminué.
According to the managing director profits have gone down.
