The conditional
1 Formation
1.1 Regular verbs
For all verbs the conditional is formed by taking the future
stem
and adding the following
endings -ais, ais, -ait,
-ions, -iez, -aient.

If we had any money we would give you some.
Je t’avais bien dit que tu vendrais ta voiture facilement.
I told you you’d sell your car easily.
Il nous a dit qu'il attendrait jusqu’à quatre heures.
He told us he’d wait until four o’clock.
Il m’a dit qu'il resterait jusqu’à dimanche.
He told me he’d stay until Sunday.
1.2 Semi-irregular verbs
Formation is the same for semi-irregular verbs:

S’il ne lui téléphonait pas en rentrant chez lui elle s’inquiéterait.
If he didn’t phone her when he got home she’d get worried.
Ils n’ont pas prévu qu'il neigerait.
They didn’t forecast snow.
Si j’étais riche j’ achèterais une maison à la campagne.
If I were rich I’d buy a house in the country.
La météo avait annoncé qu’il gèlerait la nuit dernière.
The weather forecast said there would be frost last night.
Il voulait lui offrir un cadeau dont elle se rappellerait toujours.
He wanted to give her a present she’d remember for ever.
1.3 Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs are formed in the same manner as regular and semi-irregular verbs:

Si vous assistiez à la remise des diplômes nous en serions honorés.
If you were present at the degree ceremony we would be honoured.
Il suffirait d’un geste irresponsable pour rallumer la guerre dans la région.
It only needs one irresponsible action to reignite the war in the region.
Nous espérions que ce nouveau médicament offrirait une vraie possibilité de vaincre la maladie.
We’d hope that this new medicine would offer a real possibility of conquering the disease.
Si nous n’étions pas si pressés nous ne prendrions pas l’autoroute.
If we weren’t in such a hurry we wouldn’t take the motorway.
Je suivrais volontiers ses conseils mais je souhaiterais avoir quelques précisions.
I’d happily follow his advice but I’d like to have a few clarifications.
2 Use of the conditional
The conditional is used in the following contexts:
2.1 Expressing wish, need
When expressing a wish or need:
Ce serait bien agréable d'aller
à la plage aujourd'hui
It would be really nice to go to the beach today
2.2 Sentences containing si
In a sentence containing si:
Je viendrais avec vous si je
n'étais pas si fatigué
I would come with you if I wasn't so tired
2.3 Polite requests
For making polite requests or suggestions:
Pourriez-vous m'aider, je cherche
l'Hotel de Ville?
Could you help me, I'm looking for the Town Hall
2.4 After au cas où
Je prendrai un pullover au cas où le temps se refroidirait
I'll take a jumper in case it gets colder
2.5 In the conditional perfect
Si tu me l'avais dit plus tôt, je serais venu t'aider
If you had told me sooner, I would have come and helped you
En t’adressant à une agence tu aurais trouvé un appartement plus vite.
If you’d gone to an agency you’d have found a flat more quickly.
Si j’avais su je serais allé à la banque moi-même.
If I’d known I’d have gone to the bank myself.
Si vous l’aviez prévenu de votre absence il aurait pu trouver un remplaçant.
If you’d told him you weren’t going to be there he could have found a replacement.
Tu aurais fait mieux d’aller voir le médecin tout de suite.
You’d have been better off going to see the doctor straightaway.
En coupant à travers champs nous aurions gagné une demi-heure.
If we’d cut across country we’d have saved half an hour.
