1 De qui
/ duquel
These are used as part of a longer phrase containing a
preposition
:
1.1 De qui
De qui is used for people:
L'homme avec l'aide de qui
j'ai trouvé les documents ...
The man with whose help I found the documents ...
La femme près de qui j'étais
assise ...
The woman next to whom I was sitting ...
L’homme près de qui je suis assis est l’oncle de la mariée.
The man I’m sitting next to is the bride’s uncle.
Son ami Paul, avec l’aide de qui il a créé l’entreprise, prend sa retraite.
His friend Paul, with whose help he created the company, is retiring.
M. Lecler, en l’absence de qui je dirige l’usine, m’a prévenu de votre venue.
Mr Lecler, in whose absence I’m running the factory, informed me you were coming.
L’homme autour de qui se précipitent les journalistes est un acteur bien connu.
The man the reporters are flocking around is a well-known actor.
Le ministre, à l’insu de qui la décision a été prise, était furieux.
The minister, without whose knowledge the decision was taken, was furious.
1.2 Duquel, de laquelle, desquels, desquelles
And duquel and derivatives are used for things
(note that de laquelle
is always two words):
La montagne sur les pistes de laquelle
il y a toujours beaucoup de neige ...
The mountain on whose slopes there is always plenty of snow
...
La maison près de laquelle
l'incident a eu lieu ...
The house near to which the incident took place ...
Ce sera bientôt le centenaire de la société, à l’occasion duquel nous avons organisé de nombreuses activités.
It will soon be the company’s centenary, on the occasion of which we have organized a number of activities.
L’église en face de laquelle nous habitons est une église orthodoxe.
The church opposite which we live is an Orthodox church.
L’appartement de Sylvie, au-dessus duquel nous habitons, a eu un dégât des eaux.
Sylvie’s flat, above which we live, suffered water damage.
La voiture à côté de laquelle je me suis garé avait un sabot sur la roue avant.
The car I parked next to had a clamp on its front wheel.
C’est une cause pour laquelle il se bat depuis très longtemps.
It’s a cause he’s been fighting for for a long time.
2 Où
Où can be used to express various ideas of time
and place where auquel or dans
lequel would otherwise be used:
La ville où l'on m'a envoyé
The town to which I have been sent
A l'époque où je l'ai connu
At the time (that / when) I knew him
La ville où on m’a envoyé n’est guère intéressante.
The town they sent me to is not very interesting.
Je l’ai reconnu à l’instant où je l’ai vu.
I recognized him the moment I saw him.
A l’époque où je l’ai connue elle n’était pas encore célèbre.
At the time I knew her she wasn’t famous yet.
Il a regretté ce qu’il a dit à l’instant où il l’a dit.
He regretted what he said the moment he said it.
Au moment même où il était censé être à la réunion il était en fait à la cafétéria.
At the very time he was supposed to be at the meeting he was in fact in the cafeteria.

ce que, ce
dont
These are used when referring to a non-specific idea:
Dis-moi ce qui s'est passé
Tell me what happened
Prends ce que tu veux
Take what you want
Voilà ce dont vous avez besoin
Here's what you need
Ce qui m’a amusé, c’est qu’il avait oublié d’enlever son chapeau.
What I found funny was that he had forgotten to take off his hat.
Ce n’est pas ce à quoi je pensais, mais ton idée est quand même bonne.
It’s not what I was thinking of, but your idea is still a good one.
Ce pour quoi elle se bat, c’est la protection de cette espèce.
What she’s fighting for is the protection of this species.
Nous avons essayé de mettre par écrit ce sur quoi nous sommes d’accord.
We’ve tried to write down what we agree on.
