1 Definition
Semi-irregular are -er
verbs
that are broadly
regular, but where there are minor differences between the nous
and / or vous forms and the other forms.

2.1
Verbs ending in -cer
Verbs ending in -cer like commencer,
forcer, lancer and remplacer
take a c
cedilla
(ç) in
the nous form:
Je commence / Nous commençons
le travail à 9 heures
I / We start work at 9 o'clock
Ils remplacent tous leurs vieux ordinateurs par des portables.
They’re replacing their old computers with laptops.
Nous commençons à nous habituer à notre nouvel appartement.
We’re starting to get used to our new flat.
Nous finançons la moitié du coût du projet.
We’re financing half of the cost of the project.
Elle grince des dents en dormant.
She grinds her teeth when she’s asleep.
En général il se déplace à bicyclette.
Generally he gets around by bike.
2.2 Verbs ending in -ger
Verbs ending in -ger like bouger,
changer, manger and voyager
retain the e after the g
in the nous form:
Je mange / Nous mangeons
rarement de la viande
I / We rarely eat meat
Nous voyageons de moins en moins à cause des enfants.
We travel less and less because of the children.
Parfois nous corrigeons notre travail tout seul.
Sometimes we correct our work on our own.
Ils exigent que nous soyons de retour avant minuit.
They require us to be back by midnight.
Une fois le chariot rempli, nous nous dirigeons vers la caisse.
Once the trolley is full we head for the checkout.
Il a des boutons rouges qui le démangent.
He has red spots which are making him itch.
2.3 Verbs like lever
With verbs such as lever, peser,
and mener the e in the
stem
changes to è in all forms except nous
and vous:
Je me lève / Nous nous levons
à 7 heures du matin
I /We get up in the morning at 7 o'clock
Les pourparlers de paix s’achèvent sur une impasse
The peace talks are ending in deadlock.
Je me lève à sept heures tous les matins.
I get up at seven o’clock every morning.
Aujourd’hui nous vous emmenons voir les chutes du Niagara.
Today we’re taking you see the Niagara Falls.
Elle mène une campagne pour l’abrogation de cette loi.
She’s running a campaign to abolish this law.
Il est midi, je crève de faim.
It’s midday, I’m starving.
2.4 Verbs like espérer
With verbs such as espérer, céder, inquiéter and posséder
the é in the
stem
changes to è
in all forms except nous and vous:
J'espère / Nous espérons
te revoir bientôt
I / We hope to see you again soon
Nous gérons de manière responsable les fonds qui nous sont confiés.
We manage responsibly the money which is entrusted to us.
Après l’enregistrement à l’hôtel nous cédons à la tentation de faire les magasins.
After checking in at the hotel we give in to the temptation of going shopping.
Nous préférons passer nos vacances au bord de la mer.
We prefer to spend our holiday by the sea.
Elle espère pouvoir revenir bientôt.
She hopes she can come back soon.
Nous réglons une partie de cette facture en espèces.
We’re paying part of this bill in cash.
2.5 Verbs
like jeter
Verbs ending in -eler or -eter
like jeter, appeler, projeter
and rejeter double the
consonant
l or t in all forms except nous
and vous:
Je ne jette jamais /Nous ne
jetons jamais les bouteilles avec les ordures
I / We never throw bottles out with the rubbish
Il projette de faire le tour du monde l’année prochaine.
He’s planning on going around the world next year.
Si vous m’ appelez demain j’aurai la réponse à cette question.
If you call me tomorrow I’ll have the answer to that question.
Je ne me rappelle plus le nom du chanteur.
I can’t remember the singer’s name.
J’ai deux soeurs, elles s’appellent Anne et Pauline.
I’ve got two sisters, they’re called Anne and Pauline.
Nous ne jetons pas nos bouteilles, nous les recyclons.
We don’t throw away our bottles, we recycle them.
2.6 Verbs
like acheter
Exceptions to the above include verbs like acheter
and geler which do not double the t
or l:
J'achète / Nous achetons
tous nos légumes dans ce magasin
I / We buy all our vegetables from this shop
J’achète mon pain chez le boulanger en face de mon appartement.
I buy my bread from the baker’s opposite my flat.
Nous congelons les légumes immédiatement pour en garder toutes les vitamines.
We freeze the vegetables immediately to keep all the vitamins in.
Nous gelons tous les prix pour l’année à venir.
We’re freezing all prices for the year to come.
Le concombre ne se congèle pas.
Cucumber does not freeze.
Sophie et Marie achètent souvent des vêtements dans cette boutique.
Sophie and Marie often buy clothes from this shop.
