How French works
Conjunctions are words like et, ou or parce que that connect words, phrases or clauses .
These are conjunctions that introduce words, phrases and some types of clause. The most common are et (and), ou (or), mais (but), puis (then) and car (for):
Il est rentré chez lui et a allumé la télévision
He went back home and turned on the television
Cette fille est intelligente mais elle ne fait pas assez d'efforts
This girl is clever but she doesn't try hard enough
Il n'est jamais allé en Amérique car il a peur de l'avion
He's never been to America because he's afraid of flying
These are conjunctions that introduce a subordinate clause .
Parce que + indicative - because
Je suis rentré à la maison parce que j'étais fatigué
I went back home because I was tired
Puisque + indicative - since
Comme + indicative - as
Puisque ça vient de lui, ce doit être vrai
Since it comes from him, it must be true
Comme elle n'avait rien de prévu, nous l'avons invitée chez nous
As she had nothing planned, we invited her to our house
Vu que, étant donné que (both + indicative ) - seeing as, given that
Vu que la nuit tombait, nous sommes rentrés chez nous
Seeing as night was falling, we went home
Etant donné que tu te sens mieux, tu peux maintenant aller à l'école
Seeing as you're feeling better, you can go back to school now
De sorte que + indicative - so
Le temps était mauvais, de sorte que nous ne pouvions pas sortir
The weather was bad, so we couldn't go out
Result is most commonly expressed in French by adverbial expressions such as donc (therefore), alors (so), par conséquent (as a result) or c'est pourquoi (that's why):Cette année son anniversaire tombe un samedi; elle pourra donc le fêter à la maison
This year her birthday falls on a Saturday; she'll therefore be able to celebrate it at home
Elle avait laissé son numéro de téléphone, alors je l'ai rappelée tout de suite
She'd left her phone number, so I called her back straightaway
Pour que, afin que (both + subjunctive ) - so / in order that
Le patron m'a laissé partir 2 heures en avance pour que je puisse prendre mon train
The boss let me leave 2 hours early so that I could catch my train
De peur / crainte que (ne) + subjunctive - for fear that
Le docteur a prescrit des antibiotiques de peur que son état (ne) s'aggrave
The doctor prescribed antibiotics for fear that his / her condition would get worse
De sorte que + subjunctive - so that
Ils ont changé la date de la soirée de sorte que je puisse venir
They rearranged the party so that I could come
Bien que, quoique (both + subjunctive ) - although, even though
Bien qu'elle soit née en France, elle ne parle pas couramment le français
Although / Even though she was born in France, she doesn't speak French fluently
Alors que, tandis que (both + indicative ) - whilst
Quand elle est rentrée, Pierre dormait au soleil alors qu'il était censé tondre la pelouse
When she got back, Pierre was sleeping in the sun whilst he was supposed to be mowing the lawn
Elle aime les chats tandis que lui préfère les chiens
She likes cats whilst he prefers dogs
Si + indicative - if
S'il y a du soleil demain, nous irons à la plage
If it's sunny tomorrow, we'll go to the beach
Si nous avions une voiture, nous irions à la plage
If we had a car, we would go to the beach
Note that si is never followed by the conditional - you cannot say:
*Si nous aurions une voiture, nous irions à la plage
À condition que, pourvu que (both + subjunctive ) - provided that, as long as
Je viendrai avec toi à la soirée à condition qu'on n'y reste pas trop longtemps
I'll come to the party with you provided that we don't stay too long
À moins que (+ optional ne) + subjunctive - unless
Nous pensions aller au cinéma, à moins que vous (ne) vouliez faire autre chose
We were thinking of going to the cinema, unless you want to do something else
The word unless can be more easily expressed using sauf si + indicative :Nous pensions aller au cinéma, sauf si vous voulez faire autre chose
